Exceptionally rare mid 18th century English primitive forest Windsor chair of wonderfully sculptural form and generous size. The subtle crown shaped top rail redolent of the earliest examples of this form of chair from the early 18th century. The arms made from a single bowed piece of English straight grained ash and the arm supports similarly shaped. The saddle shaped seat hewn from a single piece of sycamore. The simple turned and tapered legs, straight at the front and out swept at the rear,  all pegged through the seat. The chair retains much of its original blue green paint finish. The overall shape, with its generously raked back lends itself to relaxation as opposed to formality. These chairs were often made for outdoor use as garden chairs in the early 18th century. The condition is remarkable. C.1750
